Nice, but more phrases would be good.

The idea is nice, but there are some mistakes in the German
The idea is nice, but there are some mistakes in the German, and as a native speaker I have to say that some phrases are just not used like that others contain grammatical errors. These are mostly fine details, thus still 3 stars. Nevertheless it keeps me from using it in my German classes, and I can't whole-heartedly recommend it. To point out some examples: * Cereal is translated with Mehlspeise. The translation is not completely correct (Mehlspeise is a meal made with flour, pancakes for example) and the word is not in use for young people. So really off in a book aimed at children. * "Happy New Year" is translated as "Glückliches Neues Jahr" which a) is never said like that, we say "frohes neues Jahr" and also, "glücklich" means something slightly different than happy: in the sentence "I am happy" it does translate to glücklich, but translating "glückliches neues Jahr" back to English, it would have to mean something like "a new year with lots of good fortune" I suppose - I am not sure as it is never said. * "Ich möchte ein Sandwich" can be found on one page (supposed to mean I want a sandwich). Correct would be "Ich möchte einen Sandwich". Pronounced it sounds almost the same, but when you write it down it should be grammatically correct. Also, while Sandwich can be understood by most Germans, the correct German word would be Butterbrot or simply Brot, and especially children would use this rather than the English word which is used in the narrow meaning of what we think of as English sandwich: white bread with a sandwich cream and lettuce cut into triangles. So all in all a bit questionable.

not convinced
I am not convinced, if this kind of translation works for learning another language. I am a language teacher and bought this book for one of the kids I am tutoring. We are not using it after all. As English and German use the same alphabet, this book does not make much sense anymore. I would not recommend it for small kids, instead would start straight.

Shocking
Size of the hand, tiny writing, difficult to read for young children and impossible to keep it open for colouring as it keeps closing. Absolutely ridiculous.

I’m going to scan some pages, blow them up and then print off. Then we can see what we are coloring and do it more than once!

Amazing

This may be meant for children but it's also a cute, easy-to-use traveler's introduction to polite phrases and a basic vocabulary. Pictures identify the words and they are used in very simple sentences at the bottom of the page. It's cleverly designed to teach something of sentence structure and word order without a single grammar lesson. This would be fun for an adult to use before tackling a Berlitz or other phrasebook. It's pocket size. I think it would also be great for its intended audience, making it easy and fun for a child to acquire a basic grasp of another language.
