Fantastic for the price!
This is the second pair of these fabulous headphones I have bought after one of our pesky pooches chewed through the cable of the first pair which I purchased from a major high street retailer at a fair bit more cost than through Amazon, imagine my relief when I spotted these which were not only identical but also a lot cheaper! My wife is best described as a casual user of headphones, using them for her FLAC player infrequently and for watching Netflix etc. on her tablet so hardly putting them through their paces nor expecting the ultimate audio experience but she absolutely loves them and upon trying them myself I have to say I am very impressed too, certainly better than generic headphones or earbuds supplied with equipment such as MP3 players and tablets. They are nice and comfortable to wear and of the on ear variety although my wife is lucky in having small ears which almost turns them into full over ear headphones as a bonus! She could easily wear them for a few hours without discomfort and they are nice and light on the head. The audio quality is excellent for the price, a little bass heavy but they are supposed to be being in Sony's 'Xtra bass' category but they are not overwhelmingly so which will also suit those not seeking a pumping bass. I know that sound quality and experience is a personal thing so the opinions of others should be taken with a pinch of salt but I own a more superior headphone than this and stand by my verdict of excellent audio quality for the price but note I said for the price, these headphones are far from audiophile but then again they don't have the hundred's or perhaps even thousand pounds price mark of the holy grail of equipment. This is by no means a bad thing however as the average user would likely be extremely pleased with them and a massive upgrade on the bog standard ones thrown in with an MP3 player and they would certainly be pleased with the funds that remain in their bank after purchase! I have no fear in highly recommending these headphones to anyone looking at them, after all if you are looking at them then you have already established type and budget etc. so go for it and enjoy!

Long review with TL;DR conclusion at the bottom for a good product
Viewers can skip the first paragraph because it's simply history. Also note that my review is quite biased to those transitioning from in-ears. I've been using in-ear's my whole life. To me the noise-cancelling capabilities of in-ears, comfortability after long periods of use, as well as its price to sound quality(especially in the trebles) were better compared to that of headphones. But my earphones were very worn as I have had them for half a decade and I thought it was time for me to replace them. So I thought I'd try headphones this time. Sony was my go-to audio device brand. I have high regard for their product build quality as my previous earphones, although worn and slowly disintegrating(the rubber parts), is still producing very enjoyable sound - even after 5 years of brutal companionship with me. They're product pricing has also been very good with products catering to those with limited budgets and true-blue, no-compromises, audiophiles. Good job Sony. I don't have a lot of money to spend, so the best for the least is top priority. So my eyes immediately set upon these set of headphones while browsing Sony's headphone line-up. Cheaper than most, looks fantastic, and advertises what I crave in music of genre that I listen to - extra bass. For those also transitioning from in-ears this is what I can objectively state, bass is MUCH bigger on these headphones. The bass is definitely celebrated when listening to music genres like dance, hip-hop, electronic, dubstep, house, and others associated; it was smart of Sony to advertise this product to consumers who listen to these sort of genres in their product website. It is also amazing for gaming which is usually rich in low frequency ambient sound. However, the trebles of some music does get muddied by the high bass. Something that I, of course, noticed from the transition to headphones from earphones. But I somehow learnt to adapt to the reduction in treble volume as the boost in bass and amazing low frequency audio clarity and range are overpowering benefits. Although having mentioned that treble quality is muddied by high bass, these headphones does not in any way have bad treble quality. I only stated it because I was comparing them to in-ears. But being headphones, It also has amazing depth perception and stereo surround sound capabilities. The build is mostly plastic, including the headband. I'm not too worried about the "life expectancy" of this product; I previously mentioned the reason why that is. The headphones also does have an in-line mic and remote which will come in handy in some occasions. Personally I don't use it very often but it's there for anybody who does. I've heard recordings taken with the mic by other reviewers and they sounded pretty good. Overall the build and features are good but the aesthetics are amazing. We'd have the textured speaker housing and the colour options to thank for that. My major concern with the product is long term use. They're on-ears which means they put pressure on your ears when you wear them. After prolonged use they will begin to cause ear soreness. But that can be said with most on-ears thus not going to effect my rating. TL;DR: + Satisfactory sound quality with impressive low frequency audio ranges. + Bass IS extra. + Excellent depth perception and stereo surround capabilities. + Looks as good, if not better than advertised. + Does come with in-line remote and mic for smartphone use. + Well priced. + Trusted Sony build and performance quality, rightfully earned by long time product user. - Are on-ears so don't expect prolonged use to be comfortable

First I'd like to explain what I'm using is testbed I'm using an LG v20 my subject program is Poweramp it has one of the best DQ that I've ever seen in any program. In my opinion this is the best music program on the market now let's get down to cases I ordered the MDR series headphones latest model MDR xb550ap s to start with I found them to be lacking in high-frequency really good solid Punchy bass line but just terribly insensitive in the mids and highs I had to drive the EQ real hard to get anything out of them and they have developed a buzz in the right cup as well I read many articles and lot of people were saying and I do mean a lot that the MDR xb450ap or miles better and nowhere near the same as the 550 for the sake of brevity I set these up and they're right they are absolutely day and night different very very decent high frequencies and meds better than I expected much much better the base on the 450s are not quite as good as the 550 but they can be driven to where they're nearly perfect every time I buy a Sony product I am impressed even the 550 didn't sound badly however I've been told that if they don't say Thailand on the first try in the headphone chord that they are not original Sony headsets the 450s do say Thailand on them the 550 say China be that as it may the difference between the two headset is night and day before 50s are much better much much much better clean more than loud enough at 50% now your results May Vary because the LG V 20 has one of the best headphone amplifiers on the market this is why I bought this phone one of the reasons I've been impressed with LG in their smartphones for a long time but it does it has one of the best sound systems ever so you may not have the same experience I tried to watch a little Netflix which does not have the benefit of an EQ the LG does not come with a system EQ native so it's flat these headphones come a lot as in the 450s a lot closer to being flat however I have not been able to make them distort yet the 550 distort readily as I said the right cup has a terrible rattle in it I'm going to see if Amazon will take them back and I suspect my comparison may not be valid but I've been told by multiple YouTube reviews and articles online that there is a v a s t different as in night and day between the 55 and 45 products I can tell you audio wise this is absolutely true the headband is much cheaper than the 550 but it's comfortable and ultimately doable between the two the only real difference is the outside of the headset on the 450s are aluminum and circular pattern the 550 has aluminum an plate on the top of the headbands that really stylish looking but otherwise it serves no actual purpose the padding on the top of the headset I don't miss it in the 450s where its present in the 550 if you need a good set of headsets strictly for a smartphone these are the ones you want the 450s if you can't get those the 5500 aren't bad but they're not as good as the 450s get those while you can at the price that I paid for them I'm under $40 you can't miss these headphones compared to the finest that I've ever used and I am an audiophile I have a akgs sennheiser's you name it I've tried them all some of the best studio cans you can think of with the price of these headsets comparing to the best $200 headphones you will be foolish not to get a pair of these while they last no offense but if you're on the market this is the time to buy to summarize the high-frequency is crisp when properly adjusted is not overbearing and clean vocals are little on the light side but it's not something you will miss much especially after you use them for a while you kind of get used to it the base is Punchy and clean but more importantly natural sounding more like the way it was originally recorded at least in the selections of music that I tested it on and I have yet to make them distort I have listened to every manner of music you can think of from Steely Dan to classical music to The Clash to the cars you know the work even the Grateful Dead Terrapin Station sounds wonderful I couldn't take them off my special test song for me is easy to be hard by Three Dog Night I've listened to this on every kind of sound system and mode of presentation you can think of from LP to CD to AC3 these headsets sound as natural as the finest audio systems I've ever used and I've used a few thank you for taking the time to read my review if you did so I appreciate it and I hope you find it useful I studied these things for about 4 days now and I'm very impressed D 450 headset sound much better than they have a right to sound at the price point that they're being sold at Amazon please don't raise the price but you would be well within your right to do so they sound like $200 headsets no kidding just remember the 450 is not the 550 variant AP added at the end simply means that I has the inline mic if you need this it works perfectly as good as any I've ever tried
